10 Reasons to Switch to Natural Skincare Products ASAP

We've come a long way since the times when Greek women would apply poisonous lead carbonate to their faces to achieve a fashionably pale complexion. Or have we?

As recently as 2019, the FDA ordered the recall of 9 beauty products due to the presence of asbestos.

The average woman today still relies heavily on chemical-laden products to get the latest look. We know that all these manmade substances can't be good for us, but do we know just how bad they really are?

Take a look at all the health and other reasons why you should switch to natural skincare products and natural beauty products right away.

1. Natural Skincare Products Contain No Harmful Ingredients

Brace yourself. These are just some of the harmful chemicals found in common beauty products that you probably apply to your skin every day.

Imidazolidinyl urea

Quaternium-15

Quaternium-15, 18, and 26 are just some of the substances that release formaldehyde when they mix with air. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, so check your labels for the following:

  • DMDM hydantoin
  • bronopol
  • BHUT (butylated hydroxytoluene)
  • Diazolidinyl urea
  • Sodium hydroxymethyl glycinate
  • Imidazolidinyl urea
  • Methenamine

You'll usually come across these chemicals in skincare lotions, shampoos, and baby products!

BHT & BHA

These butylated compounds are endocrine disruptors. They can cause skin allergies, reproductive, organ, and developmental toxicity. They're used as preservatives in almost all cosmetics and also in diaper cream.

Rather opt for products containing natural preservatives like Vitamin E.

lead powder

Lead

The harmful effects of lead are well documented and it's banned in products you apply to your skin, yet the FDA has openly stated that around 99% of cosmetic products contain some.

While these levels may be well below the safety threshold, it all adds up with continued use. This finding alone is enough reason to steer clear of traditional cosmetics. Colorants are the usual suspects for lead contamination in beauty products.

To be safe, rather opt for products colored with natural pigments such as fruit.

Phthalates

Phthalates can mimic human hormones, so they wreak havoc with your endocrine system. They can cause reproductive, developmental, and neurological damage.

Often, they're hidden under the label 'fragrance'. Cosmetic companies don't need to disclose the ingredients that give their products a unique smell because these are 'trade secrets'.

The only way to avoid phthalates is to choose products that owe their fragrance to plant oils and essences.

Parabens, Octinoxate, & Siloxanes

Parabens, like Isobutylparaben, are frequently used as preservatives in cosmetics and skincare products. According to the European Commission on Endocrine Disruption, parabens can cause hormone malfunction and obesity.

What's more, these harmful chemicals easily penetrate human skin. Steer clear of all products with ingredients ending in -methicone or -siloxane and steer clear of them.

p-Phenylenediamine

This ingredient is a respiratory toxicant. Look for the letters, CL, followed by a five-digit number.

It's most often found in permanent hair dyes.

carbon black

Carbon Black

Carbon black can cause organ toxicity and cancer and it's usually listed as one of the following ingredients:

  • Channel black
  • Pigment black 6 or 7
  • Acetylene black
  • Arrow
  • Atlantic
  • Black pearls

Enough doom and gloom, let's focus on the positive reasons why you should switch to natural skin care products instead.

2. Natural Beauty Products Smell Better

If you look at almost any hyper-allergenic product or one that's designed for sensitive skin, you'll notice that it's fragrance-free. That's because, as we've seen above, harsh chemicals are responsible for the gorgeous, albeit fake, scents in most beauty products.

When you opt for natural beauty products, there's no need to forego the wonderful scents of flowers and herbs. While some astringent essences, like citrus, can pose a problem for sensitive skins, there are many others that are totally safe.

In fact, things like sage, rose, chamomile, lavender, and blue tansy can help soothe irritated inflamed skin.

There's no denying that fresh natural fragrances beat imitations hands-down. You'll never come across any chemical undertones and you always know exactly what you're getting.

3. Organic Skin Care is Gentle on Your Skin

Traditional healers have turned to nature to treat ailments since the dawn of time. So, it makes sense that the best way to enhance your natural beauty, while safeguarding your health, is to do the same.

Many traditional cosmetics work well, and they work fast, but at what cost. Eventually, you'll start to see the effects of poisoning your skin morning and night.

The ingredients in organic skincare products meet the same criteria as organic foods. So they're literally good enough to eat. They contain no residues of pesticides or fertilizers and no harsh chemicals.

4. Natural Skin Care Brands are Eco-Friendly

Likewise, organic ingredients originate from sustainable farming. There are no chemicals used in producing these raw ingredients. That means, they lessen the load on the Earth’s resources, as well as limit ground, air, and water pollution.

What’s more, as more people discover the benefits of organic produce, more farmers are switching to organic farming.

When it comes to protecting our natural resources, every little bit counts, and you’re doing your bit by supporting responsible farming and manufacturing processes.

5. All Natural Skin Care Brands Care About You

Most natural skincare brands are boutique operations that still take time and care when producing their all-natural products. Small batch production means they know every element that goes into their creations.

Many of the people behind natural skincare products are students of aromatherapy, herbalism, or even pharmaceuticals, so they know their stuff. A lot of their early experimentation was for their own use, so they know what works and what doesn't too.

These small-time operators can't afford even one unhappy client, so they take great care to ensure that everything they put their name on is of the highest quality.

6. Natural Skin Care is Kind to Animals

Two words - 'laboratory testing'.

While many major cosmetic companies claim to be cruelty-free, they're using principles that have resulted from animal testing. So, while they might not be directly responsible for harming laboratory animals, they're still benefiting from earlier studies that did.

Most (unfortunately not all) natural cosmetics brands that are vegan and cruelty-free do not conduct any animal tests. There's no need to when you're using ingredients that come from pure, natural sources, with no harmful additives.

7. Natural Skin Care Works Better

Organically grown plants have a higher level of antioxidants than their non-organic peers. Antioxidants help protect your skin from free radicals, reduce oxidative stress and prevent pigmentation.

That means you can expect better results from organic products than any other kind of skincare.

Up to 95% of the contents of organic skincare products are active ingredients. That means they get to work straight away to soothe and nourish your skin.

8. It's Cheaper in the Long Run

More active ingredients also mean good value for money, since you're not paying for fillers that do absolutely nothing for you.

Active ingredients usually only make up about 10% of synthetic skincare products since there's a legal limit to how many chemicals you can include in these products.

Since their products are totally harmless, natural cosmetics producers can cram as much goodness as possible into every bottle or tube without fear of harmful side effects. So, you'll use less of the product to get the results you need too.

8. Natural Skincare Genuinely Protects You Against Aging

Thanks to their harsh ingredients, chemically-infused products will eventually dry out your skin no matter what they say in their advertising.

As you age, your skin naturally loses its ability to produce nourishing oils naturally and that's where plant-based facial oils step in. These naturally derived oils are full of antioxidants that protect your skin from the ravages of pollution, sun, and wind so that it stays firm and elastic for longer.

9. Natural Products Can Help You Fight Acne

Acne is a mystery of modern skincare since it's caused by a wide range of factors.

Like sensitive skin, there are several things that can set off an acne attack. Harsh beauty products are one of them. When you choose soothing natural products, you've got a better chance of avoiding pimples and blackheads.

If you do experience a break out while using a natural product, you'll know exactly what's causing it since there are no hidden ingredients.

10. You Have a Great Variety to Choose From

The all-natural skin care industry is growing rapidly as more people discover these benefits. That means that brands have the finances and markets to experiment more with their products.

There are few limits to the ways in which you can combine natural products to create more treatments, fragrances, and cleansers. On the other hand, traditional skincare ranges are severely limited in what they can do using volatile synthetic ingredients.
