7 Anti-Aging Skin Care Tips
Keep your skin radiant and healthy with these natural skincare tips!
Your skin is the largest external organ on your body and plays an essential role in your overall health. In fact, what is happening on your skin reveals many clues about what is going on internally.
Unfortunately, many people do not care for their skin properly, even when the signs point to needing extra care. A proper skincare routine doesn’t need to be complicated. There are steps you can take to improve the health of your skin that are not time-consuming but have big benefits.
What causes damaged skin?
Many factors lead to dull and damaged skin. This includes a poor diet, stress, lack of sleep, sun/weather exposure, dehydration, and genetics. When your skin is impacted by one or more of these conditions, it harms the skin’s natural protective barrier.
What is the result of damaged skin?
Skin damage appears in the form of wrinkles, sun spots, a loss of elasticity, redness, dullness, acne, and skin that is more prone to injuries. In severe instances, skin cancer can even be caused by not protecting your skin properly.
Even if your skin is damaged now, you can take measures at home to repair and nourish your skin. By taking the time to care for your skin, you will set up good habits for healthy skin today and in the future.
1. Practice sun safety and limit sun exposure
Some sun exposure is necessary to get a necessary dose of Vitamin D; however, skin protection is also essential. Ongoing sun exposure, without taking protective measures, can cause age spots and wrinkles. In severe cases, it may cause skin cancer.
Sun protection starts with sunscreen application. To be optimally effective, sunscreen needs to be applied once every two hours when you are outdoors. It should be applied more than that if you are sweating a lot during vigorous activities or swimming. Apply sunscreen to your face after cleansing and to exposed areas of your body. Wearing a lip balm with SPF will protect the skin on your lips.
Even when it is cloudy outside, you can still get sun damage. That’s why it is important to wear sunscreen every day!
The sun is typically the most intense between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wearing sunscreen and protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats and visors, help protect your face. There are also athletic clothes designed with UV-blocking fabrics.
2. Avoid pollution as much as possible
Everyone is exposed to pollution on some level every day. Free radicals that linger in the air from pollution are harmful to your skin. They hinder collagen production and reduce the oxygen circulation in your skin. This can cause acne, rough patches, wrinkles, and dull-looking skin.
Luckily, there are some simple ways you can limit its harmful effects. Wearing sunscreen and a protective moisturizer can block pollutants from penetrating your skin.
If you can’t avoid pollution and spend a lot of time in a city or in traffic, be sure to cleanse your skin at the end of the day to remove debris from pollution.
3. Choose the right skincare products
Plant-based skincare ingredients are natural, gentle, and packed with antioxidants that replenish your skin. When you are choosing a skincare product, read the ingredient label, and look for recognizable ingredients. You can also lookup skincare ingredients on a database such as the EWG Skin Deep database.
Our Green Tea Detox Mask contains three natural ingredients and no harmful chemicals, preservatives, or fillers. Formulated with clay, matcha, and lemongrass, it detoxifies and cleanses pores to remove impurities. Not only does it work to moisturize and protect your skin but it can also help minimize skin damage, soothe redness, calm blemishes, purify the skin, and improve signs of aging.
4. Stay hydrated from the inside out
Water is essential for health and radiant skin. It helps keep your skin hydrated and also plays an integral role in keeping your body cool when temperatures rise.
Hydration keeps you energized, maintains joint lubrication, delivers nutrients to cells, and much more! Every cell and tissue in your body benefits from hydration, so there’s no surprise it also benefits your skin.
Keep a water bottle by your side all day as a reminder to drink enough water. If you don’t like plain water, there are many ways to flavor it in a healthy way. One way is to drink fruit infused water. In our FREE 5-Day Water Challenge, you will learn how to make delicious infused water with recipes like Strawberry + Mint Detox Water.
Eating fruits and vegetables that have high water content also contribute to hydration. At Teami, we have many delicious recipes to spice up your water! This includes recipes with water-rich foods, such as apples, oranges, watermelons, cantaloupes, kiwis, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, and celery. These also help boost your Vitamin C intake which helps improve the elasticity and collagen in your skin.
5. Take a collagen supplement or use a collagen powder
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It’s considered the scaffolding that holds the body together. Unfortunately, collagen production dramatically declines with age. This causes a loss of elasticity and strength, which causes signs of aging.
You can boost collagen in your body by consuming clean animal proteins. This includes organic beef, fish, and poultry. These foods contain amino acids that contribute to collagen production. Consuming bone broth is another way to increase collagen intake.
Supplements and powders containing collagen peptides will give your body a boost of collagen and naturally support connective tissues throughout the body. That includes support for the structure of your skin.
6. Use a moisturizer or oil every day
The foundation of good skincare is an effective moisturizer. A good moisturizer will contain natural ingredients that are hydrating and soothing, such as aloe, oats, natural oils, and antioxidant Vitamin E.
Avoid moisturizers with petroleum-based ingredients, which can dry out your skin. Ingredients such as dimethicone may also be harmful. Dimethicone traps moisture, which does not allow your skin to breathe properly while sweating.
Get in the habit of moisturizing your skin in the morning and at night. The best time to moisturize your skin is after you’ve had a shower or bath. Adding moisture to skin that’s already damp helps seal some of this moisture into your skin. Teami oils, such as Soothe, Repair, and Glow all work to moisturize your skin around the clock!
7. Treat your skin with the gentleness it deserves
Even with a proper skincare routine and adequate hydration, there are many lifestyle factors that impact your skin. By treating your skin with a pampering routine that encourages health and radiance, you can keep our skin in tip-top shape for a lifetime with the following habits:
- Keep bath time to a minimum: Long showers or baths, especially in hot water, will strip your skin of its natural oils. Spend no more than 10 minutes bathing and use warm, not hot, water.
- Avoid strong soaps: Detergents and soaps may strip oil from your skin. Use mild cleansers that don’t contain any harsh ingredients.
- Shave with care: Before shaving, apply a gentle shaving lotion, gel, or cream so your skin is fully lubricated. Always use a sharp, clean razor to get a close shave. Do not shave against the way your hair grows, but instead shave with it.
- Pat your skin dry: To make sure plenty of moisture remains on your skin after you’ve washed, pat your skin with your towel rather than rubbing.
Keep your skin looking young and glowing with our natural skincare products.
