How to Use a Facial Roller for Maximum Benefits
Have you ever had a face massage?
If you have, you know just how relaxing it can be. If you haven't, well, you should try it because if you ever wanted a relaxing way to get glowing, more youthful-looking, this is it.
Of course, there is more than one way to do it. You can pay lots of money and make regular trips to the spa to have a facial. Or you can learn how to use a facial roller. We recommend the facial roller method, as weird as it sounds. Once you try it, you'll love it so much that you'll want to do it every morning — or evening — or both. It's that amazing!
Keep reading to learn about the benefits of facial rolling and learn how to do it on yourself.
What Is a Facial Roller?
If you've never heard of facial rolling before you might be wondering what on earth we're talking about. Perhaps you're picturing rolling across your face. Don't worry, it's not quite so crude.
Facial rollers are small tools that kind of look like razors. Of course, instead of having blades, it has a roller...or two. Most facial rollers will have a larger, main roller on one end and a smaller one on the other end for smaller places like under the eyes.
Rollers are typically made from some kind of stone. Quartz, jade, and amethyst are common. We particularly love the clear quartz because the lovely stone also emits positive energy and has healing and relaxing properties.
Benefits of Facial Rolling
Now let's get to the good stuff. Besides feeling amazing, what are the benefits of facial rolling? Turns out, there are quite a few.
Lymphatic Drainage
The lymphatic system is the body's waste disposal system. It runs throughout the entire body and carries away the toxins and other unpleasant things that can build up in our bodies via the lymphatic fluid.
However, unlike the cardiovascular system which has the heart to keep the blood circulating, the lymphatic system has no such engine. Instead, it relies on your body's movement to push the fluid through the system.
As you might imagine, unless you're doing some serious push-ups with your cheeks every day, it's hard to drain the lymphatic system in your face. The roller takes care of this quite nicely. Remember to roll towards your lymph nodes (by your ears) to push the fluid in the right direction.
Draining this fluid is excellent for reducing the puffiness in your face.
Stimulates Blood Flow
Likewise, the movement of the roller stimulates blood flow in your face. This "wakes up" your skin and gives you that fresh youthful glow that you so desire. It also helps to bring more nutrients and oxygen to your skin, essential ingredients for the skin to repair itself.
Relaxation
Getting a face massage is also immensely relaxing and can help relieve anxiety. Many people carry tension in their face or jawline without even realizing it. The gentle movements of the roller ease this tension and help you feel more relaxed.
Headache Relief
The first three benefits all contribute to relieving headaches. Draining the toxins from your face, stimulating blood flow, and releasing tension will all help with headaches. It may not immediately relieve a migraine, but as part of your daily routine it can help ward off stress headaches and other pains typically caused by tension.
Better Absorption of Skincare Products
Using the roller with your favorite skincare products promotes deeper and faster absorption, allowing you to get even more benefits from them. We recommend our Glow Facial Oil with jojoba oil, rose petals and cinnamon bark or our Hibiscus Infused Vitamin C Serum.
Some people also use them over a face mask for the same reason. You can even lightly use the roller at the end of your makeup routine to soften the look and appear less "made up".
How to Use a Facial Roller
Using the roller is quite simple. You don't have to press hard, the weight of the roller with a light hand is enough to enjoy the benefits without breaking any capillaries. It's a good idea to roll the neck first to open the lymph passages and give the fluid in your face somewhere to drain.
Remember to always roll upward and outward and don't roll back and forth. Roll each area 3-6 times before moving on to the next part.
- Begin by rolling along the jawline outward from your chin toward your ear
- Continue rolling outward/upward until you reach the cheekbone
- Flip the roller around to roll upwards under your eye and alongside your nose
- To finish, roll outward from the middle of your forehead out towards your temples
Pro tip: the stone roller will naturally be cool to the touch even at room temperature. However, many experts recommend refrigerating your roller. The chilliness helps calm inflammation and redness as well as tightening pores and bringing life to dull skin.
You can use your roller in the morning to help give your face an energized look for the day. Alternatively, using your roller at night is a delightful part of a relaxing bedtime routine.
