How to Get Rid of a Headache Naturally

When a headache strikes, you might feel desperate to get rid of it. Headaches are common and can range from mild to severe. They can happen for many reasons, and there are many different types of headaches.

There are many over-the-counter options to relieve headaches quickly. However, the good news is there are also many ways to relieve headaches naturally.

Here are 13 ways you can relieve headaches at home

1. Drink water

Dehydration is one of the biggest culprits of headaches. Even mild levels of dehydration can impact your mood, performance, and the likelihood of getting a headache. Dehydration occurs when your body doesn’t receive enough fluids, and the related headache is typically accompanied by other signs. This includes dark urine, brain fog, and fatigue. Research has shown that dehydration can even shrink brain tissue, causing it to pull away from the skull. No wonder that causes headaches!

2. Skip alcohol

Got a headache? Skip the cocktail. Alcohol has been found to trigger headaches in people who are already prone to them. That includes migraines and tension headaches. Alcohol also leads to dehydration and fluid loss, which can also trigger headaches.

3. Use a cold pack or compress

Placing a cold pack on your forehead may help ease a headache. Put ice cubes in a bag and wrap them in a towel, or use a bag of frozen vegetables. Keep the cold pack on your head for 10 minutes and take a break. Repeat if necessary. You can also try taking a cold shower.

4. Check what’s on your head

Are you wearing a tight headband? Got a ponytail tied tightly? Is your hair in a bun? Are you wearing a hat or a visor? All of these things can cause headaches if they’re too tight or too heavy. Easing pressure on your head may help relieve headache discomfort.

5. Turn down the lights

We live in a world of constant exposure to light from screens. Computers, phones, tablets, televisions, and other bright or flickering lights can cause headaches. Consider using anti-glare screens on your computer if this is a trigger. You can also cover windows with blackout curtains while napping to block out light.

6. Practice massage

Giving yourself a head and neck massage can help reduce headache pain and tension. You can easily do this at home without any special equipment. Gently massage around the forehead, neck, temples, and shoulders to ease stress. You can also apply pressure to the area with a handheld massager or massage stick.

7. Get adequate sleep

Sleep deprivation can cause many health challenges, including headaches ranging from mild to severe. The ideal amount of sleep is between seven and nine hours per night. Aim for an amount of sleep that helps you feel rested daily.

8. Try topical essential oils

Essential oils contain therapeutic compounds from plants. One useful essential oil for headaches is peppermint oil. Apply peppermint essential oil to the temples to enjoy its fresh, crisp scent and reduce headache discomfort.

9. Take magnesium

Magnesium is a critical mineral for good health. It is involved in nerve function, calcium transport, and more than 300 other functions. Some studies have shown that people deficient in magnesium are more prone to headaches. And one study from the Journal of Neural Transmission states magnesium deficiency could be present in up to half of people experiencing migraines.

10. Avoid scent triggers

Are you sensitive to scents? Strong odors from perfume, chemicals, and other strong scents can trigger headaches. Avoid sources of these smells at work, at home, and while you’re out and about.

11. Drink caffeinated tea

Caffeine can provide headache relief in addition to other benefits. Caffeine has been shown to improve focus and alertness. It is even an ingredient in some over-the-counter headache relievers. Drinking green tea is a natural way to get caffeine. Consider a cup of Teami Alive or Teami Profit tea blends.

12. Do yoga

Yoga is known for its ability to strengthen the body and promote relaxation. Not only that, yoga can assist with weight loss, stress reduction, and even headache relief. One study of 72 people examined the impact of yoga on headaches after three months. When the time period was over, the study revealed a significant reduction in headaches in the participants who practiced yoga regularly compared to the ones who did not.

13. Get regular exercise

According to the American Migraine Foundation, “regular exercise can reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches and migraines.” When you work out, your body releases endorphins. Endorphins are considered the body’s “natural painkillers.” They relieve stress and increase mood.

There are many ways to increase your activity level, even if you’re new to exercise. Try this quick booty workout if you’re looking for a place to start, or add extra steps to your day.

Types of headaches

Taking steps to relieve and avoid headaches naturally depends on the type of headache you’re experiencing. Here are four common types of headaches:

Sinus headaches: This involves pain and tension behind the eyes and nose caused by congestion.

Tension headaches: This is the most common headache. These are often caused by stress. Pain is located in the middle and top of the head.

Migraines: Migraines are a more severe type of headache that causes throbbing and sensitivities to light and movement.

Cluster headaches: Cluster headaches typically occur in one spot of the head, usually on the side.

If headaches are negatively impacting your life, such as interrupting your ability to work, live your life, or complete certain tasks, it’s time to talk to a doctor. It’s essential to rule out that frequent headaches are not being caused by an underlying issue. However, millions of people experience headaches daily and they are very common.

Taking a holistic approach to relieving headaches can help you live a healthier lifestyle overall. And if you’re looking for more healthful tips, don’t forget to check out the Teami lifestyle blog for recipes, workout ideas, and so much more!
