7 Natural Ways to Relieve Bloating!

Research shows that 74% of Americans are dealing with digestive issues that include gas, uncomfortable bloating and abdominal pain.

Does this include you?

If so, you might have tried every over-the-counter medication on the shelf advertised to relieve bloating. Yet, you're still dealing with the same discomfort as when you started.

Today, we're shedding light on a few approaches you might not have known about until now. They're proven, quick-acting and effective. The best part? They're also all-natural, so you can feel good about trying them.

Ready to learn more? Let's get started!

1. Incorporate Plant-Based Probiotics Into Your Diet

Also known as your gut microbiome, your gut flora is a system of microbes that lives in your digestive tract. In recent years, studies have proven that the health of this system can affect your overall lifestyle, influencing both your physical and mental health.

If too much bacteria and yeast accumulate in your gut flora, it can lead to bloating and other gastrointestinal issues. To slow their growth, you can reach for live, good bacteria that work to counteract excessive buildup.

Thankfully, it isn't difficult to incorporate these probiotics into your diet. Look for fermented foods labeled as such, including:

  • Kimchi
  • Tempeh
  • Sauerkraut
  • Kombucha

Not only will these foods help settle your stomach and ease any bacterial imbalance, but they will also lessen gas production and act as natural stool softeners. If your bloating is attributed to constipation, this could make a major difference.

2. Stay Hydrated

You've heard it all of your life, but staying hydrated really is as important as everyone claims it to be. Find a great reusable water bottle you don't mind carrying it around and fill it up throughout the day. Drinking plenty of water helps flush out your system and transports nutrients throughout your system.

Want to boost its health benefits even more? Squeeze a fresh lemon into your water, pulp and all.

The citric acid that it contains can help ward off and prevent kidney stones from forming. In addition, it's also full of soluble fiber, which can help combat constipation and bloat.

4. Kick Your Coffee Habit

One benefit of incorporating our teas into your daily routine? You'll be able to kick your coffee habit to the curb for good. Though it might taste great and get you going in the morning, your 7:00 a.m. cup of Joe isn't doing your gut any favors.

Why not?

Coffee is naturally dehydrating, depleting your body of the moisture it needs to stay regular. In addition, it ups your internal acid production, which can irritate your gastrointestinal tract. While it's best to eliminate it from your diet altogether, even cutting back to one or two cups a day can help.

5. Try Simple Yoga Moves

You don't have to be a contortionist to reap the benefits of yoga! There are plenty of gentle, easy moves that anyone can master in minutes. In addition to being one of the best natural remedies for bloating, yoga is also great for your muscular and joint health.

If you feel like your digestive system is in knots, set aside about 15 minutes and grab a mat.

The first move to try is called apanasana. It sounds fancy, but it's one of the simplest, most soothing exercises you can do for your whole body, and it's an especially effective way to relieve any gut pain. To get into position, lie flat on your back. Then, slowly hug your knees to your chest.

Hold that move for as long as you'd like, then let your knees drop to one side, allowing your head to fall to the opposite side. This is called a supine twist. Switch sides and feel the stretch along the full length of your body.

Other tried-and-true yoga movements that can help stimulate blood flow in your lower body include downward dog and standing forward fold. You can learn how to do those moves here!

6. Eat a Banana

It sounds easy enough, but can a banana really help you feel better when you're in the throes of painful bloating and cramping?

Turns out, many experts agree that the answer is "yes", especially if the fruit is extra-ripe.

Chocked full of fiber, bananas are a great digestive aid. They also help ease your bowel movements.

An added benefit? They contain high levels of potassium, which can help regulate your body's fluid levels. When those levels become excessive, that's when you start to notice the bloating!

The key is to check the ripeness of your bunch before you dig in. While those soft and slightly bruised fruits are ideal for your gut, unripened ones can have the opposite effect.

In the dietary realm, these are known as "resistant starches". This means that it can be more difficult for your body to digest bananas when they're firm and slightly green. Overall, however, it's still smart to reach for this snack. Once they reach your digestive system, all bananas help encourage the growth of those healthy microbes that are so beneficial to your gut.

7. Eliminate Dairy For a While

It's hard to accept, but your nightly ice cream habit could be one of the underlying causes of your consistent bloating.

When we're infants, our bodies produce a plentiful amount of an enzyme called lactase. This is the key component we need to successfully process lactose, which is the primary sugar in milk.

As newborns, we need this enzyme in vast quantities to digest our mother's breast milk. However, as we grow into adults, our stores of lactase decrease.

As such, it becomes more difficult to digest the lactose in milk.

Whether you've been diagnosed as lactose intolerant or not, research reveals that about 65% of the human race has a reduced ability to digest lactose after we pass infancy. That means there's a good chance that the dairy you consume on a regular basis is working against your digestive health.

While you don't have to say goodbye to your beloved coffee creamer, cheese pizza, and chocolate sprinkle cone forever, try going dairy-free for a period of time. If it significantly helps relieve your bloating, you might find that it's a move you want to stick with!
